10 Tips To Stay Warm and Stylish This Winter

Are you wondering how to stay warm and stylish this winter? I don’t mean to boast, but I’ve got all the answers you need.

I don’t like to invoke the word ‘expert’ willy-nilly, but I really am an expert in staying toasty while looking cute… if I do say so myself. My credentials include growing up in Austria, skiing every winter since the age of five and – most importantly – spending a year in Russia!

So pop the kettle on and enjoy a hot cup of tea while you read through my ten top tips on how you can stay warm and stylish this winter.

1. Over the knee boots

Let’s start with some A/W15 basics – over the knee (OTK) boots. If you follow any fashion bloggers on Instagram, you’re probably used to seeing OTK boots in your feed on a daily basis by now.

But this year’s staple is not only for tall skinny fashionistas. In fact, if you have slim legs you might find most shoes will awkwardly bunch up around your ankles. That is literally the story of how I ended up buying these £295 Kurt Geiger OTK boots!

As you can tell, choosing the perfect pair is not easy and I’ve compiled this little Lyst of the best boots this season to help you on that quest. Never heard of Lyst? It’s a website with the best designer pieces in one place – those little gems you gravitate towards when you want to really treat yo’ self. Check it out!

2. Knee-high socks

But with great shoes come great responsibilities! Your OTK boots deserve better than a pair of flimsy tights – besides, one layer is hardly enough unless you’re spending the winter in Thailand. I love knee high socks and would recommend getting a cosy knitted pair to keep your feet nice and toasty.

3. Layers

Layering is one of the best ways to stay warm and stylish this winter! Forget huge skiing jackets and bulky sweaters, because the key is combining lots of pieces which you can easily take off if you go inside. In the photo above I’m wearing a tank top, sweater, cardigan, blazer and fluffy coat… and I’d happily put on more if necessary. Don’t limit yourself to one outer layer – how about a green parka underneath a poncho cape or a faux fur gilet layered over a shiny jacket?

4. Fluffy coat

There are few fashion items I love more than a big fluffy jacket! They are super cosy and make everyday feel like a special occasion. But although they’re reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour they don’t have to break the bank – I got this cute number in Primark for £15. Try vintage stores in places like Camden Town in London to hunt down really unique vintage pieces!

5. Thermal underwear

Is thermal underwear sexy? Not rrreally. But ever since I (almost literally) froze my butt off in Russia I have embraced Bridget Jones granny pants with new-found fervour. From merino wool vests to thermal leggings, there are many tight-fitting pieces you can hide underneath your otherwise cute outfit.

6. Cute hat

I’m not exactly leading by example with this outfit, but keeping your head warm is very important – especially when temperatures drop close to zero. Slouchy beanies are the obvious answer, but I also love a good knitter turban or furry ushanka.

7. Non-metal jewellery

Metal jewellery looks cute no matter what the weather. But if the temperature sinks really low, you’ll wish you left those earrings at home. Why? Let’s have a little physics refresher. Metal is a wonderful heat conductor. In the winter outside temperatures are way below the body’s normal temperature of about 37˚C, so when we touch a metal it will feel very cold to us.

The solution is opting for plastic, wooden, leather or knitted jewellery instead – see if you can find anything you like in Lyst’s selection.

8. Touchscreen gloves

For years I shunned gloves – they made typing on my smartphone nearly impossible and that’s a total deal breaker for someone who makes a living online! Sure, that meant cracked dry skin and dried blood on my knuckles (not even joking)… but nobody comes between my iPhone and I.

But touchscreen gloves have improved a lot since I first found out about their existence. Remember those odd-looking white patches on their fingertips? Now they just look like normal plain ol’ gloves and make Whatsapping on the go as easy as it should be.

9. Pastel colours

Black is elegant and slimming, but if you want to want to stand out in the winter you have to ditch that dreary coat and embrace a bit of colour! Even beige and grey are a step up in my book – brownie points for adorable pastel pinks and greens though. And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, why not go with a canary yellow coat or vermillion gillet?

10. Bright smile

Smiling will not magically defrost your fingers, but it will make you feel all warm on the inside. Pair that smile with a bright shade of lipstick and you’re onto a winner! I’m a big fan of deep reds in the winter – a shade that beautifully accentuates those rosy cheeks and pearly teeth. After all, who wouldn’t want to take a leaf out of Snow White’s book? Winter is her area of expertise after all.

    • Do it, do it! Thermal leggings are so underrated 😀 Or even normal ones that are fluffy on the inside – they have them in Primark now!

  • ClossEnough

Awesome advices. I have over-the-knee boots and combat boots for this fall. The last one I wear practically every day. I bought them on Work well with just about all my outfits, especially a nice pair of blue jeans. I LOVE IT !

  • Haha I never tried thermal underwear but in Canada we often wear tights under our trousers, makes for a good second layer under jeans or trousers 🙂 and definitely a smile! We always say that the best way to deal with cold is to embrace it!

  • Samara

what size did you get in the jacket and does it run pretty true to size? Am so so in love with that style (and price lol). Trying to get my friend to source one out at Primark for me while I’m over here in Canada!

  • Frey de Fleur

I’ve got all of these except the touchscreen gloves so I will have to get smiling and putting on my layers! Cute post x

  • Lauren @ atipsygypsylife.com

Scarves! I didn’t know they were anything but an accessory until uni… Great list 🙂

  • You are the QUEEN of winter style!! I am so so bad at it when it gets really cold. I have one of those super long down jackets…not exactly stylish. But warm! Ha. I’m going to have to take this post to heart. I’ve got some long socks but don’t utilize them enough as I find them hard to style. I’m going to have to get creative. And join your Bridget Jones club. 😉
