5 Types of Gifts for Female Travellers

Finding the perfect gift for just about anyone can be difficult – but finding gifts for female travellers can feel like an impossibility. What do you buy for someone who values freedom more than any material possessions?

To make your life a little easier, I have compiled this list of five types of gifts many a globetrotting lady would enjoy. From luxurious spa treatments to quirky map-themed home decor this list should make any travel enthusiast jump for joy. If, for whatever reason, she does not enjoy your present, feel free to just pass the present on to me. I promise I’ll put it to good use…

Experience

The best gifts for female travellers are not material things – they are experiences! After all, what is better than giving someone… the world? If you are looking to truly spoil your favourite globetrotter, look no further than TRULY. The company specialises in luxurious, once-in-a-lifetime activities – anything from a private vineyard tour, a Las Vegas getaway or a Michelin star dinner to a supercar chase in the Swiss Alps. Don’t worry about the price tag too much – TRULY offers a wide range of gifts for less than £100!

Do you feel like your leading lady would like something a little more control over her destiny? If so, Tinggly is the answer to all your problems. For a fixed price of £80/$125, you can buy a voucher which can be used toward any of the experiences listed on their website. What’s on offer? Well, only things like a guided tour of Hobbiton, Japanese home-cooking class in Tokyo, volcano climb in Hawaii, kayaking in Laos, waterfall rappelling in Costa Rica, lion safari in South Africa… May I stop now? Are you convinced yet?

If your girl loves surprises, many airlines now offer a blind ticket. What does that mean? Well, it simply means that you purchase a (usually heavily discounted) flight to… somewhere. The twist? You won’t know where you’re going until after you’ve booked. Way to make travel even more exciting than it normally is!

Style

If you’d rather have a gift that you can actually put underneath the Christmas tree, why not treat your lady to something nice? Many travellers would rather save up money for travel than splurge and treat themselves with a little retail therapy. While material possessions will never pave your way to happiness, it’s true that it’s more comfortable to cry in a Mercedes Benz than on a bicycle.

Try to find something special the female traveller in your life would adore, but hesitate to buy herself. I love the Molton Brown travel set of twelve amazing – and, most importantly, travel-sized – shower gels. Despite what it might look like, travelling around the world is usually far from glamorous and a little luxurious body wash will go a long way in those moments of utter griminess.

Scarves are always a good idea, too – being able to wrap yourself in a cashmere cuckoon of joy while you’re on the road provides you with an amazing sense of comfort! If she likes to wear her heart on her sleeve, your friend might also like a travel bracelet which showcases all the places she’s been to. El Camino offers low-key beachy designs, while Persona’s Wanderlust collection caters to polished jetsetting fashionistas – other than that, the customisation options are endless.

If you are looking for something more affordable, Modcloth has a beautiful world map necklace and you can buy an elegant map wristwatch on eBay for under £2! That’s less than a large pack of toilet paper – and guess which they would rather find underneath the Christmas tree.

Education

Living a life of travels can be challenging. For those who choose it as their permanent lifestyle, sustaining oneself on the road can be extremely difficult. Buying someone education can seem a little, well, rude at first – but hear me out. If you give someone a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to fish and you feed them for a lifetime!

Now, I’m not saying a fishing course is the way to go here – although if that’s what the female traveller in your life is into why not! But how about a TEFL course? Teaching English abroad is an amazing way to travel for longer, get to know locals and maybe even save some money. TEFL247 are currently running an amazing deal with a 50% discount on their ultimate TEFL package… but you can get it for even cheaper at £92/$145, because I love you.

If teaching English does not sound like their thing, how about an online language course? Visiting Latin America is always fun – but how about visiting Latin America and chatting to the locals about anything from cerveza to Chavez in their native tongue? Infinitely better!

Decor

True fact – travellers love maps. Many of us are so obsessed with them that they decorate just about any surface with large outlines of faraway lands… I hope, anyway – if not, I might have to seek out some spiritual guidance to cure my wanderlust fever.

My bedding is an atlas of the world, my book shelf is bending under the weight of all my travel guides, but while I’m sure both would make incredible gifts my absolute favourite is the world map sticker on my wall pictured above. It makes me smile whenever I look at it and it inspires me while daydreaming about my next trip. Do you see all those pink pins? Those are some of the places I’d love to visit and my little map keeps me focused on fulfilling my dreams! Isn’t that the best gift you could give someone?

If your lovely lady does not have a place to decorate – or all of her pre-existing maps already cover the majority of her walls – you could buy her a scratch travel map instead. That way she will be able to keep track of all the incredible places she’s already conquered and feel the satisfaction of crossing a place off her endless bucket list.

Technology

Travel blogger or not, it is likely that your globetrotting friend spends a lot of time staring at a shiny screen. We might not dwell in cubicles, sitting behind rows of computers like patient little ducks, but don’t for a second think that travellers are exempt from society’s obsession with technology. But which piece of equipment do we crave?

Everyone likes taking photos, but travellers tend to take this obsession to a whole new level. How could we not, when we keep stumbling upon incredible new places so often? Anything from a set of phone lenses to fancy photo editing software, a sturdy waterproof case or a lightweight tripod would probably score you high points. Oh, and to keep that battery from dying consider getting your friend a juice pack for her phone – Mophie has some beautiful designs on offer.

There is one particular item many people seem to be craving this Christmas. I realised the GoPro would make a fantastic present in a rather roundabout way – after finally deciding to buy one for myself two weeks before Christmas, I realised that there was not a single place in London which still had it in stock. Not a single place! Well, technically there was one at a Curry’s in Gatwick – but going all the way to an airport just to buy a tiny camera is too crazy, even for me. If you do manage to get your hands on one though, you will make some lady very happy.

It’s not just about photography though – how about a pair of kick ass noise-cancelling headphones or a subscription to Spotify to ensure she never has to go a day without listening to her favourite tunes?

What would you like to find under your Christmas tree? Are there any gifts for female travellers you would have included in this list? Share your favourites with me – we all need to treat ourselves every now and then.

Disclaimer: I had been provided with my Vinyl Impression world map wall sticker and Molton Brown travel set by the two companies. My links to TEFL247 and TRULY are affiliate ones. All opinions are, however, my own – I love all these products and wholeheartedly recommend them. I would also like to say many thanks to JustynaSue, Lauren and Viki for their amazing great tips which helped me in putting this article together!

  • Haha you don’t need to seek spiritual help – I also have maps EVERYWHERE. Love these ideas!

    • Yay, I’m glad I have a partner in crime 🙂 Maps are just… the best. Glad you enjoyed the post 😀

  • TriReagan

I love maps! My room is covered with them as well! I personally love practical gifts. Give me money, gift cards or airline miles to help me get towards my next adventure! 🙂

    • YAY! This comments section is quickly turning into map addicts anonymous and I LOVE it 😀 Yeah, I’m definitely with you on the practical gifts… It gives us that freedom we so love 🙂

  • I totally agree on buying ‘experiences’. The older we get the less we look for material things. Experience and memories are what I cherish most. That’s a big part of the reason I love traveling as much as I do.

Did you ever get your GoPro? LOVE mine! I just bought a chest harness so I can film my first kite boarding lesson in St Lucia and post it on the blog! Watch this space!!

    • So true! I’ve also started buying others experiences, be they travellers or not. They might not know they’d enjoy that ahead of time… but they shall 😛

I haven’t bought it yet, because it was sold out everywhere in London! :O Hopefully once I’m back in London after Christmas!

  • Richelle

I have that same exact robe in blue. Whoo China bargaining markets!

    • Haha YAYYY! I love that robe so much! 😀

  • I want a globe. A really nice, antique looking globe!

Or perhaps a globe amulet from a fine jewellery brand called Annoushka which I came across through working for a jewellery blog. You can see it following the link below (you need to scroll down). I need to find a very rich boyfriend. 🙂

    • Ohhh that sounds amazing actually. Girl vs Globe would like a globe too 😛 I forget the name but there’s an amazing luxury globe maker in London, they make INCREDIBLE looking ones. Hahah I know what you mean re very rich boyfriend. I’m an independent gal and can provide for myself but… yeah, it wouldn’t hurt if someone decided to blow their money on me. That globe amulet is lovely!

Great list! I’m hoping my boyf goes with the ‘Experience’ idea and gets us tickets for a weekend away somewhere! http://www.passportpacked.com

    • Definitely! And it’s super fun if you also have him to come with you! 🙂

  • Hi Sabina,

All makes perfect sense, even from a guy’s perspective 😉

Amen on the experience note; guys and girls, although they may dig some stuff, tend to really vibe with the travel experience. My wife Kelli vibes with house sitting in Bali for 6 months versus acquiring stuff. Stuff fades away, and gets old, but these memories will stick with us forever. And yes, the online photos will too 😉

    I absolutely LOVE this!

For our anniversary, years ago, my husband got me a self taught Spanish speaking course. He said that the weekend after I’d gone through the entire course and could speak Spanish enough to get by he’s book us in a luxury hotel and fly us out to Madrid for the weekend. It really was magical.

Unfortunately, I’ve since forgotten how to speak Spanish… perhaps if I learn it again I can get another romantic weekend out of him ;).

Great List, I agree with every point you make.
