A Ballad For New York: A Home I Have Never Visited

If my heart was a city, it’d be full of crowds rushing to and fro, dark alleyways, ambitious skyscrapers and small patches of luscious grass. If my heart were a city, it would be New York.

I know it sounds crazy, but I’m at home in a city I have never been to. Whenever I see it, a sense of familiarity and belonging washes over me. I have never been there in person, but I even wrote about New York in my Love Letter To The Cities I Have Visited. I have visited hundreds of times, after all – in my dreams:

Everyone loves you, everyone freaking loves you, New York. Sometimes I pretend like I don’t just to stand out from the crowd, but the truth is that I have a huge crush on you… Is that crazy? I know we’ve never met, but I feel like we’d just get each other. We’re both so young, driven and ambitious – how could we not fall in love? I think it’s about time we found out.

I think it’s about time we found out… I wrote that sentence last July and I am still no closer to achieving my dream than I was then. Or am I?

Well, actually, I am! I was recently contacted by Aer Lingus, asking whether I’d be interested in hopping on a flight to NYC with a bag full of £1000 (or, you know, a tiny little credit card) and producing a New York travel guide for them. My answer? “DUH!”

But unfortunately, few things in life are as simple as saying “DUH!” and then just twiddling your thumbs, waiting for someone to sweep you off your feet and take you to New York. It isn’t impossible – something very similar has actually happened to me once, but that’s a story for another time!

What matters now is that I reaaaaally want Aer Lingus to help me get to New York and I need your help. You see, they decided the best way to tell people about it was to partner with a talented blogger who would write about the trip from the perspective of a real traveller. But to make matters more challenging, they have selected 19 bloggers – yours truly included – and now we are all competing for their attention in the #ThruTheQ campaign.

Like I said, the winning blogger will win two tickets to NYC and £1000 spending money. But guess what – by voting for me, you can win the same exact thing, with minimal effort.

What can you win?

Really, it’s true. Voting for me in this campaign gives you a chance to win 2 tickets to NYC and £1000 spending money!

How can you win?

All you need to do is click the graphic below and answer one simple question. Which airport gets travellers stateside fastest? You must choose Dublin, as opposed to Gatwick or Heathrow. This is very important – if you select a UK airport, just as in real life, your queue time will be longer and it will be counted as a “vote down”! Sad times.

Aside from having to choose it, you should also select Dublin because it’s amazing. Have you read my post about Dublin already? It’s a great city. Guess who I flew from there with? Aer Lingus of course – and they were great. So this opportunity is as much about New York as it is about working with this great airline for me!

Now for some technicalities… All votes are cast via a Twitter Handle. Each Twitter handle is allowed 1 vote per day, which is great. Why? Because since you can vote once a day for 14 days and every vote counts as a unique entry, you can vote up to 14 times. In other words, by helping me win you also help yourself win!

Without further ado, click the graphic below to get started or click here… It takes less than a minute!

  • New York truly is amazing! I went there quite a few years ago, but I still remember it clearly. And I am so lucky that I get to spend 10 weeks there this summer. Good luck with the competition! 🙂

I adore your blog and you are living the life I never could but have dreamed of. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want, but how do you finance yourself flying and having fun all over the globe, especially at the age of 21? I would love to know to see if I am just not thinking of something! I couldn’t find an email address to write this privately. Thank you!
